My fuel level sensor is not working (reads empty all the time). I am told replacing it requires a replacement of the entire fuel pump assembly at a whopping $1000 and if I don't do it, the fuel pump may fail. Any experience or advice?

thats totally wrong, its an electronic bobber in the gas tank where the connection wears out. happens in a lot of saabs. if your still under warranty, saab covers it for free, they did for me.
it is still expensive because it takes a lot of man hours to disassemble the gas tank.
